Practice Description
As a trusted advisor to global families who face a number of unique tax and non-tax issues as a result of their connection to more than one country, Maria provides international tax and estate planning services to foreign and domestic clients of the firm and provides general tax and estate planning services to the firm’s United States clients. She helps clients develop and implement global philanthropy plans. She also serves as consultant in family law, trusts and estates and other litigation matters involving international issues within the areas of her expertise.
Representative Clients, Cases or Matters
For more than thirty years, Maria has represented clients who have varying degrees of contact with more than one country (investments, residence, family members, etc.) or who migrate or are considering migration from one jurisdiction to another. She has also represented private banks, and other professionals and institutions who serve such clients. Maria advises individual clients on cross-border tax, estate planning and related issues and advises financial institutions and others who serve international clients on issues relating to the development of products and services that meet the needs of international clients and families.
Publications, Presentations and Articles
Throughout her career, Maria has traveled extensively and lectured frequently (in Europe, Asia, North America and Latin America) to professional and nonprofessional groups on international estate planning and tax issues. Maria has contributed to International Estate Planning books and publications and has written articles for industry and trade publications.
Education & Bar Admittance
Maria was born in Mexico City. In 1980, she came to San Diego where she completed her undergraduate education in Biology from San Diego State University (B.S., summa cum laude, 1983). She received her legal education at the University of San Diego School of Law (J.D. magna cum laude, 1987). Maria is admitted to practice in California. She practiced and became a partner at the law firm of Gray, Cary, Ames & Frye (1987 to 1995). She later practiced as a partner with the law firm of Baker &McKenzie from 1995 to 2007. She established Núñez Law Group in 2008 after withdrawing as a partner of Baker &McKenzie. Maria is fully bilingual and bicultural (Spanish/English).
Philanthropy
Maria is a board member of Global Fund for Women and a former board member of Women Moving Millions. Maria believes her life was shaped by opportunities, mentors and many helping hands along the way. Those opportunities allowed Maria to have a successful and fulfilling career, family and life. Maria passionately believes that every girl deserves the chance to shape her own successful and fulfilling life and is grateful that she can now invest her time and resources to help ensure girls and women around the world can enjoy their human rights, can be free of violence and be empowered to reach their potential.
